October Montana Workshop (Oct. 3-5, 2025)

$485.00

Join Turner for three days of plein air painting in the beautiful Bitterroot Valley of Montana. Turner will work to explain his entire process and approach to plein air painting. The goal for each student will be to continue seeking out and strengthening their own personal voice as an artist.

All level painters are welcome, but if you’re brand new to plein air painting, or painting in general, consider Turner’s online course “Fundamental of Landscape Painting”. It’s seven hours of instruction and will be great to get you ready to paint outside.

Travel Info:

The workshop will be based out of Hamilton, Montana.

For those flying, Missoula, Montana airport is the best place to fly into. There are several hotels in Hamilton and many Airbnb and VRBO rentals in the area.

Weather in early October can be chilly, but is typically fantastic. Please be prepared to paint in cooler weather, however, if weather is too bad, we’ll have an indoor space available.

Supplies

Oil Paint - feel free to use the colors of your choice.

Acrylic painters are also welcome. For beginners, these are good colors to start with: (Titanium White, Cadmium Yellow Light, Alizarin Crimson, Ultramarine Blue) Turner’s can shift from painting to painting but typical colors include: Titanium White, Cadmium Yellow Light, Yellow Ochre, Cadmium Orange, Cadmium Red Light , Burnt Umber, Alizarin Crimson, Violet or Purple, Ultramarine Blue, Cobalt Blue, Ivory Black. (and sometimes Phthalo Green and Phthalo Blue) It isn’t expected for you to have the same colors as Turner.

Brushes - feel free to use the brushes of your choice. Turner’s brushes include natural bristle Filberts and Rounds sizes 1-12, and a variety of large and small soft synthetic round and flat brushes. Only recommendation is to make sure in addition to smaller brushes, be sure to have several larger brushes size 6-10.

Panel/Canvas - at least 8- canvas or panels no smaller than 8x10. Turner often paints much larger on location, however, we will only be painting at each location one time. Most students end up painting sizes from 8x10 up to 16x20.

Be prepared to move and store wet paintings if using oil paint. Painting on panels is very convenient when traveling, and a wet panel carrier is very useful. Raymar brand is a great option. https://www.raymar.com/collections/wet-painting-carriers
